The Buffalo Sabres scored an upset win on Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche, but that wasn’t the only perk to kick off the road trip.

The Buffalo Sabres made small work of the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. And for Tyson Jost, the Blue and Gold are looking more and more similar to that young Avalanche team he once played for. Young as in, the team that was building its way toward winning the Stanley Cup in 2022.

“We’re an up-and-coming team and we’re young, so it sort of has that same feel of when I was first here in Colorado. The one nice thing is just the guys. Everyone is right around my age because we’re a young team, so it’s fun coming to the locker room every day. Everyone wants to get better.” – via The Denver Post

Of course, Jost didn’t stick around to win the Cup last season, as the Avalanche shipped him to the Minnesota Wild in March 2022. So maybe things will turn out differently for Jost in the Queen City?

Buffalo Sabres are young, up-and-coming, and exciting to watch

Anyone who has watched the Sabres this season should agree with Jost. No, they aren’t even currently one of the two wild card teams at the moment when you look at the standings, but leading the league in goals and a +12 goal differential is a good place to begin.

The defensive play remains spotty and the goaltending, at best, is inconsistent, with 41-year-old Craig Anderson being the only real constant in terms of productivity. But at 41, Anderson can only handle a limited time in the net.

The Sabres have also proven that, despite their age, they are getting better with time. This time last December, the team was 10-15-5 (25 points), before finishing the month of December 2021 at 10-17-2. At 14-14-2 (30 points), the Sabres still aren’t quite there, but the improvement has made them one of the league’s more exciting teams, especially if you like scoring.
