On this edition of Buffalo Sabres fans mailbag, fans gave their input on what to do with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen once Eric Comrie was healthy.
Another day, another edition of Sabres fans mailbag. With goaltender Ukko Pekka Luukkonen playing well recently, it begs the question: what should the Sabres do with UPL once Eric Comrie is healthy? I asked that exact question on Twitter and got a couple of responses. Here are the responses and my thoughts on them.
He has definitely made an argument for general manager Kevyn Adams to keep him up at the NHL level. In the last two games against two very good teams, UPL has put up some good numbers and was the reason why Buffalo defeated both the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights.
Even though he started out slow, Luukkonen has been absolutely impressive in his last couple of starts. Whether it’s making the saves any goaltender can make or making a big time save that looks like a for sure goal, Luukkonen came up big in those situations.
This one is an interesting answer. Personally, I don’t think this is the solution but it is a good possible outcome to think about. Per NHL rules, only two goaltenders can dress per game, and this would sacrifice a roster spot for a forward or a defenseman. Nonetheless, it would be an interesting and possible take.
What should the Buffalo Sabres do?
Personally, I don’t know what they should do. Looking at Craig Anderson’s and Eric Comrie’s contract, it could be possible that Buffalo either sends one of them down to the AHL or possibly trading one of them. Or, they just send down UPL and roll with the goalies who were on the opening night roster.
Anderson will be a free agent after the season while Comrie signed a two year deal with Buffalo over the Summer. If I had to take a guess, I think UPL will be the one who gets sent down. I don’t know why I think that will be the solution, but I think they want to see what Comrie has while having Anderson being the reliable veteran.
We will never know what’s going to happen once Comrie comes back but one thing is for sure, UPL has made a very strong case for him to stay with the Sabres.
