If the Buffalo Sabres keep up their high-octane ways and win consistently, will general manager Kevyn Adams put together a major trade?
The Buffalo Sabres are 16-14-2 with 34 points this season and as of Thursday morning, sit four points back holding one of the two wild card spots. Want more fun? The Blue and Gold are now 9-3-2 since they ended their eight game losing streak, good for 20 of a possible 28 points, making them one of the league’s better teams in that stretch.
If the Sabres can return from their break on December 27th and continue their high-octane approach throughout January, will general manager Kevyn Adams look to pull off a trade to send a major talent their way in a quest to return to the playoffs?
We know Adams has taken a conservative approach, and the long view of the team and its prospects. But we also know he hasn’t been silent on the matter. Here is what Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington had to say on the subject in a recent article regarding Adams (link at the bottom):
"“The NHL’s holiday trade freeze goes into effect at midnight on Monday and Adams said he’s had daily conversations with other teams, but salary cap constraints have made trades difficult league-wide.” – Mike Harrington via Buffalo News"
Adams could work to bring in a player to help the Buffalo Sabres
If I had to take a guess on which position Adams may tackle, it would be in the defensive rotation. With the Buffalo Sabres scoring at a historically good pace, it’s hard to imagine they would find another forward – unless it meant replacing Casey Mittelstadt, of course.
Anyway, I’m not expecting a major trade, but I doubt few of us saw the Sabres bouncing back from their infamous streak the way they have, where they are creeping into wild card contention as midseason approaches. Therefore, anything is possible, and if Adams believes he can find the right player in the defensive rotation, don’t be surprised if he pulls off a stunner.
The odds remain in favor that he doesn’t do this. But if the Sabres inch closer to contention or even if they hold one of the two wild card spots, expect him to at least start working the phones.
