The Jakob Chychrun sweepstakes are still a pivotal talking point for the Buffalo Sabres, so what would it cost to bring the d-man to the Queen City?

In a recent mailbag article, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News stated that Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams, like many others around the NHL are still interested in acquiring Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

Lysowski stressed that, per Elliotte Friedman, the asking price remains the same. And that could remain the case, even if Adams and other interested general managers are looking for Arizona to reduce their asking price, especially in light of Chychrun’s injury history.

If the price doesn’t drop on or before March 3rd, 2023, then Adams, if still interested in acquiring Chychrun, would need to part ways with at least two first round pick equivalents, plus a bonus piece. The trade mentioned in the article looks like this:

Will the Buffalo Sabres trade for Jakob Chychrun?

It depends on if they can continue winning and find themselves somewhat in contention for a wild card spot. If the Sabres are within a few points of a wild card, the odds of acquiring Chychrun will increase, and Adams could be comfortable with the above trade proposal Lysowski used in his article.

Rosen has developed well so far during his time in Rochester, and his arrow can continue to point north while the Coyotes would naturally benefit from a 2023 first round pick. There is no guarantee Portillo would sign with Arizona, but Lysowski also noted that it is not likely he signs with Buffalo, so expect the Sabres to try and move him regardless.

Lysowski  also touched on the Devon Levi situation both this season and next. Ideally, the Sabres would like to see him sign immediately after Northeastern’s season, where he will see time in Rochester. Going into 2023-24, Levi should be a staple with the Amerks while ideally, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Eric Comrie hold things down in the NHL.

Levi’s situation is worth mentioning here, because it directly impacts what the Sabres will do with Portillo. And that could mean tacking the latter onto a trade package like the one listed in this article. If the Coyotes want even more, expect the Sabres to add someone like Casey Mittelstadt or Victor Olofsson to the package.
