Timo Meier would be a sound addition for the Buffalo Sabres
Are the Buffalo Sabres seriously interested in acquiring Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks? Per the rumor mill, it sure looks like it.
Once again, the Buffalo Sabres are back in the trade rumor mill, this time regarding winger Timo Meier. Since June, the Blue and Gold have had higher odds to trade for the likes of Patrick Kane, Matthew Tkachuk, and Jakub Chychrun, to name a few, and they’ve yet to pull off such a trade.
That said, I wasn’t necessarily shocked when I saw Meier’s name linked to the Sabres via TSN. TSN stated that the excitement regarding Meier is that the San Jose Sharks haven’t offered an extension to the pending restricted free agent (RFA), which can attract playoff contenders.
With the Sabres playing much better hockey this season, they are in that hallowed group. They also have the cap space that some serious playoff contenders don’t have, and that gives the Blue and Gold an advantage.
Buffalo Sabres would do well to consider Timo Meier
Unfortunately to land Meier, the Sabres would have to give up a lot of compensation. Meier currently has 48 points in 49 games, and with 106 hits, he can be rather physical. While the Sabres can score at will, they need someone, anyone, to help them out in the physicality department.
He’s also another player general manager Kevyn Adams could lock up long-term. And given his age (26), he’s still young enough to fit into the Sabres long-term plans.
Do I believe Adams will pull off such a trade? The answer is a resounding no. But in the world of professional sports, it’s always wise to expect the unexpected.
So while I don’t foresee a trade here, it doesn’t mean Adams won’t shock the world and pull one off for Meier. The Sabres wouldn’t be alone in this pursuit though, as TSN also reported the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes are also rumored to have interest.
