Should Tyler Bertuzzi be on the Buffalo Sabres radar?
Tyler Bertuzzi is the latest name thrown around the rumor mill. So should the Buffalo Sabres make an inquiry? Let’s discuss what Bertuzzi can bring.
It’s no secret that the Buffalo Sabres can use another power forward. And while Peyton Krebs is embracing the role, his presence isn’t enough. Sure, we already covered three power forwards in a previous article, there is one name that we didn’t mention: Detroit Red Wings winger Tyler Bertuzzi.
Of course, the Sabres need to learn how to win again before we declare them as buyers at the March 3rd deadline. But with Bertuzzi listed as a potential trade candidate out of Detroit, it’s possible he can end up with the Blue and Gold if they turn around and enjoy a strong second half of the month.
Tyler Bertuzzi would bring a physical edge to the Buffalo Sabres
Of course, the price and situation must be right for the Sabres to land someone like Bertuzzi. But let’s assume for a minute that they start winning again and enter March on a hot streak. At this point, you can expect general manager Kevyn Adams to at least inquire for a power forward like Bertuzzi, or someone of his caliber.
One downside with Bertuzzi is risk. Despite enjoying some solid seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, the winger struggled this season, posting eight points in 21 games. Clearly, injuries have also been a concern, so don’t be surprised if the Sabres pass on Bertuzzi in favor of another power forward.
On the flipside, Bertuzzi’s physicality and his ability to score could motivate Adams to look beyond the 27-year-old’s shortcomings this season. Last year, he put up 62 points in 68 games, with 42 takeaways, 65 hits, and 41 blocks.
It’s clear the Sabres must get more physical, and Bertuzzi is one player likely to be moved at the deadline who can bring that layer of physicality instantly. We will see if Buffalo makes a move if they can get it together over the second half of the month.
