After scoring an upset win on Monday night, can the Buffalo Sabres make it two in a row tonight against the Washington Capitals?

The Buffalo Sabres must take advantage of the help they are getting. Last night, the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders all lost. Buffalo meanwhile, is coming off of a massive upset win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A win tonight would give the Sabres 73 points, inching them closer to the Penguins (78 points) and the Islanders (76 points). It’s also important to remember that after having played 69 games, the Isles are at a three-game disadvantage as I write this.

So can the Sabres take it tonight against Washington and gain a little more ground the playoff race? Let’s check out the odds and make a prediction.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Capitals Odds – Game 64

Per Fan Duel, the Buffalo Sabres are +1.5 underdogs on the road against the Capitals. The Over/Under is 6.5, and the Sabres moneyline is -104. The Capitals moneyline is -115.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Capitals Prediction – Game 64

For the Sabres to win this game, they cannot worry about what’s going on around the league. As noted above, the teams they needed to see lose all lost, but the what ifs can’t get the best of them.

They need to think about scoring the next goal, and stopping Washington’s attack, as opposed to thinking about the two points a win will bring. It might sound like basic strategy, but it’s going to be tempting to think about how much closer they will get in this race with a win tonight.

If Buffalo doesn’t get ahead of themselves, they can win this hockey game. But if they’re busy thinking about their near future, their chances won’t be great. They need to go out, play their game, and focus on doing what it takes to win in the present moment. Then they can worry about the standings.
