The 2023 NHL Draft may be what some consider to kick off the Buffalo Sabres season. For others, the year starts with development camp.

It will have been two-and-a-half months since we’ve last seen Buffalo Sabres hockey in full swing. So development camp is a good way to get that much-needed hockey fix between the end of the regular and training camp.

It will kick off on July 2nd and run through July 6th. Yes, the 3-on-3 prospect tournament is returning, and it’s always fun to watch. At this time, we don’t know what the official roster will look like, but it’s safe to say that you will see some of the organization’s most exciting names like Jiri Kulich, Matt Savoie, and Isak Rosen in action, barring an unforeseen injury or ailment.

In case you’re interested in attending, here is the schedule of events. And remember, everything takes place at the LECOM Harborcenter:

  • Sunday, July 2nd: 2 PM to 3 PM
  • Monday, July 3rd, 12 PM to 1 PM
  • Tuesday, July 4th: Off
  • Wednesday, July 5th: 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM
  • Thursday, July 6th: 9:15 AM to TBA

Buffalo Sabres development camp offers a glimpse into the future

While the Sabres main roster is one of the league’s youngest and that few spots are open for the top prospects, development camp nonetheless gives us a look into the future. Inevitable injuries and business interests for specific players will undoubtedly mean that some players on the main roster will ultimately depart, and a good few of the prospects attending camp will, in time, work their way into wearing a blue and gold uniform.

Others may impress us, but lack of room on the roster means they will see their NHL career begin elsewhere. So what makes development camp so much fun is the aura of mystery surrounding it. Many of these kids would love to become Buffalo Sabres, but in the back of their minds, they are also auditioning for all 32 teams.
