The Buffalo Sabres have made a few notable offseason moves already. If you missed the news, here is a rundown of what’s been going on.
The 2022-23 NHL season is officially over. A new Stanley Cup champion has been named and we are a week away from the NHL Draft. And when it comes to the Buffalo Sabres, they have been pretty active.
No crazy trades or signings have happened (yet) but they brought back a few of their own players. In this article, I’m going to recap the Sabres offseason so far. Their first order of business, they brought back captain Kyle Okposo on a 1 year $2.5 million deal back in May.
After last season, the future of Okposo was in doubt. He made it clear that if he wanted to play again, it was going to be with the Sabres. Otherwise, he was most likely going to retire. For the last few seasons, Okposo has been the heartbeat of the team and embodies what it means to be a captain.
After that, it was a pretty quiet start to the offseason. That all changed yesterday however as the Sabres made a couple more signings. Just like Okposo, Buffalo also brought back Zemgus Girgensons with the same contract as Kyle.
Buffalo Sabres have been retaining their own players in 2023 offseason
It’s crazy to think that Girgensons is the longest tenured Sabre on the roster. He’s been through all of the bad years and has been a solid depth player on the roster. Him and Okposo mean a lot to this team so it’s nice to see them both back for another season.
Lukas Rousek also got a two-year deal with Buffalo as well. Rousek was good in the Amerks playoff run and is viewed as one of the Sabres best prospects. The team also signed Ryan Johnson, Nikita Novikov, and Vsevolod Komarov to entry level contracts.
So there you have it. You are caught up on the Sabres offseason. For some reason, I have a feeling it’s going to be a busy offseason for the Sabres but we’ll see what happens.
Now the question bodes; Who will the Buffalo Sabres bring to, or bring back, to their organization next? Tyson Jost may be on-deck.
