On the next installment of How They Fared, we take a deeper dive into the season series between the Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues.
To this day, people are still talking about the Tage Thompson trade. Ryan O’Reilly went on to win the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe trophy in 2019 with the St. Louis Blues. While it was a gut punch for the Buffalo Sabres, it’s turning tides now.
Why do I say this? Well on the next edition of “How They Fared”, we take a look at the two game series between St. Louis and Buffalo. The first of two meetings took place in Buffalo back in November.
It was an exciting game to be at as the Sabres were debuting their alternate goathead jerseys. When I saw them, it brought back great memories watching the team when I was a little boy.

Just 18 seconds into the contest, Jeff Skinner got the party started as he scored his eighth goal of the season. After 20 minutes of play, St. Louis scored an early goal of their own on the power play 53 seconds into the second period.

After that moment, it was all Buffalo as they rattled off five unanswered goals enroute to a 6-2 victory. Not a bad way to debut the new jersey’s! About two months later, the two teams met up in St. Louis for the final meeting.
After an emotional and hard fought win in Dallas the night before, Buffalo looked to keep it rolling. It was a great start for the Sabres as Skinner scored one minute into the game and then Alex Tuch made it 2-0 just 25 seconds later.
Owen Power added another as Buffalo had a 3-0 lead going into the second period. Just 70 seconds in, Tage would score against his former team to make it 4-0. St. Louis didn’t go away as they scored three straight goals to make it 4-3 Sabres. With a minute to go, Dylan Cozens scored shorthanded to seal the victory for Buffalo as they swept the season series.
