The Buffalo Sabres are entering 2023-24 with higher expectations than we have seen in the last decade and a good start in October is key.

The best way for the Buffalo Sabres to show us that higher expectations are not a problem this season is to get off to a hot start, so October 2023 will be pivotal. The question is: Can they get a good jump in the season’s first month and set the stage for a winning season?

Last year, they did just that, even if the Blue and Gold dipped in November. However, the Sabres nonetheless got the ball rolling in the right direction one more, and a strong October was one reason they walked away with a winning record, even if they just missed the playoffs.

So what might October 2023 look like for Buffalo? Keep reading to hear my take on their first month back in action.

Buffalo Sabres will face a difficult stretch in October 2023

The Sabres open the season up against a team that took them into overtime in three straight meetings – the New York Rangers. And this year, the trend continues, as the Sabres take it in an overtime thriller.

The Blue and Gold travel to Long Island next to face the Islanders, and they will start off with a win on the road, stealing a hardfought game by one goal. However, I got them dropping three straight to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Calgary Flames, and the Islanders, but the Tampa game will be an overtime loss, putting Buffalo at 2-2-1 so far.

Last year, the Sabres crushed the Montreal Canadiens to end a skid, and the same thing happens here. However, the Ottawa Senators will give them more than they can handle on the road, as will the New Jersey Devils, putting Buffalo at 3-4-1 so far on the season. They will, however, end the month on a high note in a surprising come from behind win over the Colorado Avalanche and finish 4-4-1.

It won’t be a pretty month of October, and one reason is the sheer strength of schedule. Both New York teams will be tough, as will Jersey. Ottawa always plays Sabres hard, and you can expect another hardfought season series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
