While Devon Levi still needs to make the Buffalo Sabres roster, his new gear looks more than ready to take the ice in a blue and gold uniform.

I’ve always joked that if we were to reimagine nicknames for all 32 NHL teams with a Star Wars theme, then the Buffalo Sabres would simply need to put the word ‘light’ in front of their current name. The Buffalo Lightsabres, or if you wanted, you could also roll with Lightsabers.

As for goaltender Devon Levi, the lightsaber has officially become part of his new helmet’s theme. If you haven’t seen the 21-year-old goaltender’s new gear yet, feel free to take a look for yourself:

While the helmet itself comprises some amazing, icy-blue artwork, the lightsabers down at the chin area complete the look. And it only makes you wonder if the helmet he decides to wear when the Sabres debut their Goathead jersey this season will contain a Sith theme. However, Levi may have already given us some foresight.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender helmet should be the talk of the NHL

If you remember correctly, last season, Levi didn’t have a helmet ready for the games when the Sabres would wear the Goathead jerseys. Therefore, he designed the helmet himself, and put a few red lightsabers on it.

Clearly, it’s only appropriate that if you play for the Buffalo Sabres, then you should add lightsabers to your helmet, whether they are Jedi blue or Sith red, depending on which uniform combination you’re wearing. But if Levi makes the team out of camp (and there is no reason to think he won’t), he will be in even rarer company.

We all know how often goaltenders need to spend time developing in the AHL and in the lower leagues before they’re deemed NHL-ready. Levi signed with the Sabres shortly after his season with Northeastern ended this past season, and just a couple weeks later, he made his NHL debut.

He also played well enough to warrant strong consideration to open the 2023-24 season as the 1A, and it would take a lot for him to lose that position. We know how fast a Jedi’s (and a Sith Lord’s) reflexes are, and we have also seen Levi emulate that both at Northeastern, and in the NHL.
