Eric Comrie has a great chance to secure the backup spot as the Buffalo Sabres take on the Penguins tonight in Preseason Game #4.

I think it’s safe to say Devon Levi is locked up to be one of the Buffalo Sabres goaltenders this season. But, the Sabres need another guy. After seeing Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen last night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins can be a big one for Eric Comrie.

Comrie last played in the opening preseason game against the Washington Capitals as he played two periods and stopped 15 shots and allowed two goals. The Sabres are playing their third game in what is a back-to-back, to back, to back situation in Pittsburgh.

Why could tonight be meaningful for Comrie? Other than the current elephant in the room for the goalie competition, Comrie will be facing most of the Penguins big boys. Yesterday morning, Pittsburgh announced that Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang and other starters will be in the lineup against Buffalo.

If there’s a game for a player making a case to be on the main roster, it’s this one. This is the perfect opportunity for Eric to prove that he can be on the main roster once the regular season starts.

Can Eric Comrie gain an edge to win the backup goaltending job tonight?

The Sabres will have some their starters playing as well but when it comes to the opposing players, tonight will be a good test for Comrie to prove that he can be the backup. After coming back from his injury last season, Eric played solid for the Sabres.

It’s a new season and he’s trying to prove that he can be helpful on the main roster. Those names on the Penguins that I mentioned are just a few of the starters playing tonight. I think with Luukkonen’s struggle last night, it really opened the door for Comrie.

After this game, Buffalo will be halfway done with the preseason. If Comrie does well today, I think he has a pretty good spot of earning the second goaltending spot on the roster.
