Buffalo Sabres uniform gets a sensational upgrade for 2023-24

The Buffalo Sabres already have one of the best uniforms, logos, and color schemes in the NHL, but their uniform just got better this season.

When the Buffalo Sabres take the ice for the regular season, they’re going to don a slightly different look. But it’s a much-needed alteration, as it features a patch with the initials RJ to honor legendary play-by-play broadcaster Rick Jeanneret.

Starting in 1971, Rick took over the broadcast booth, and he remained there until the 2021-22 season. The Sabres recognized Rick shortly before his retirement near the end of the 2022 season on April 1st of that year for RJ Night. In that game vs. the Nashville Predators, the Sabres won 4-3 in what was a hard-fought battle.

Rick called his final game as the Sabres broadcaster on April 29th in an overtime win vs. the Chicago Blackhawks. He then received the title of Broadcaster Emeritus shortly thereafter, and continued to make appearances at Sabres-related events during the 2022-23 season.

Buffalo Sabres will commemorate Rick Jeanneret in 2023-24 with jersey patch

Rick died earlier this year on August 17th, 2023 of multiple organ failure, leading the Sabres to host their Remembering RJ ceremony shortly thereafter, and MSG to televise some of his most memorable calls. He will also be honored tomorrow night, and throughout the season for his 51 years of service in the Sabres broadcast booth.

You will also see three different patches on the ice this season, with each holding a distinct color scheme. The one worn with the royal blue home uniform that you will see tomorrow night is also blue, featuring white and gold outlines, while the design worn with the Goatheads will be black with red and white outlines. With the road whites, you will see one with a white background and gold outlines.

Overall, Rick Jeanneret will always be remembered as not just one of the greatest broadcasters in Buffalo sports history or even NHL history, but as one of the best in the history of North American sports.
