The Buffalo Sabres failed to get to back 500 as they lost to the Montreal Canadiens, and here are a few reasons why that was.

The Buffalo Sabres have not gotten back to .500 and it’s becoming frustrating. Buffalo fell to 2-4-0 on the young season after losing to the Montreal Canadiens by a final score of 3-1. I was at the game last night and some things stood out to me.

In this article, I’m going to tell you my takeaways from the loss. The good, the bad, and the ugly, it will all be involved in this article. Enough talk, here are some takeaways from last night’s defeat against the Habs.

First and foremost, Eric Comrie and the Sabres defense were good once again. We all know coming into the season, the goaltending and blue line for Buffalo was the biggest question marks. Montreal had 27 shots on goal in total but after the first two periods, they only had single-digit shots.

Comrie held his own in this game. The first goal you can debate since it was a huge rebound right to a Habs player and the second goal was a mad scramble in front of him and he couldn’t cover the puck. Despite the loss, Comrie and the defense did a solid job.

Buffalo Sabres were unable to score in last night’s loss…

One of the frustrating takeaways, the Sabres offense was very good but couldn’t score more than one goal on Jake Allen. I think we can all agree that Buffalo was the better team. I know nothing else matters other than the final score but the Sabres definitely should’ve won that game.

You have to give some credit to Allen, he was absolutely fantastic and stole the win for Montreal. The final shot count was 37-27 in favor of Buffalo but the Sabres pretty much controlled the game; they just could not solve Allen and Montreal. The chances were there, they just could not capitalize.

Dark cloud of awful luck has haunted the Sabres early in the season…

If there has been one constant on this team six games in, it’s they have the worst luck. Whether it’s dominating and still losing, or blocked shots, the Sabres cannot catch a break. Buffalo had five power plays and only scored once, which was their only goal.

In the third period, the Sabres were awarded a power play. David Savard pretty much killed off the power play for the Canadiens as he blocked a couple of shots from Buffalo. Not just in this game but it feels like whenever the Sabres have a golden chance, it somehow gets blocked. Credit to Savard but once again, it’s incredibly frustrating to see pretty much every shot being blocked.

Time to be concerned?

My final takeaway, should we be concerned about a couple of players? I understand it’s still very early but Owen Power and Alex Tuch do not look themselves. Power has two assists on the season while Tuch only has one.

If I’m going to be honest with you, I’m more concerned about Tuch. Power is still young, and as we all know, it takes a while to be a good player in this league, especially as a defenseman. But what’s going on with Tuch? I’m not sure if he’s injured or what but he does not look like himself. We’ll see if they and the rest of the team can bounce back tonight as they take on the Ottawa Senators.
