The Buffalo Sabres may be the NHL’s most curious team so far in 2023-24. They haven’t played well, but they have been encouraging after losses.

Lately, many in Buffalo Sabres circles have talked about harrowing facts that this season is not going at all as planned. Or at least it’s not going at all in the way we thought it would, as a strong contingent of fans felt the Blue and Gold would be much better heading into December 2023.

One of those facts we covered is the team’s 1-7-2 record following a win this year, but we haven’t put much stock into the other side of the discussion. While the Sabres can’t seem to consistently string multiple wins together, they have also bounced back well after most losses this year.

The Blue and Gold currently boast an encouraging 9-3 record following a loss and overtime losses in 2023-24. While it’s hard to watch this team stagnate the way they have after all but one time following a win, we also can’t ignore the fact that they have only strung together multiple losses in a row just twice in the season’s first two months. This occurred once during the first two games of the season, and again between November 11th and November 17th.

Buffalo Sabres have shown an ability to bounce back after losses so far

Why is this point relevant for tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes? Simple: The Hurricanes were one of two teams the Sabres lost to in overtime earlier in the year. They played Carolina well the first time around this season in Raleigh, and they were coming off of a huge upset win over the Toronto Maple Leafs three days before.

Tonight, the Buffalo Sabres are looking to bounce back from a loss to a St. Louis Blues team in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. For a team that has scored nine goals in its previous two games, perhaps the Blue and Gold can once again channel that ability to bounce back and take tonight’s game.
