While the Buffalo Sabres find themselves in a playoff drought, there were some really great times in the franchise's history. The Sabres have seen some incredible players step on the ice for them and have some remarkable franchise records that they own.
As the saying goes 'records are made to be broken,' but for the Sabres it doesn't seem like any records are close to being broken. When looking at the franchise records, these are three in particular that are likely to stand longer than some of the others.
Single Season Goals Record
This record is held by Alexander Mogilny, who set the record in 1992-93 with a remarkable total of 76 goals scored. It would be 20 more goals than the previous record, which was held by Danny Gare since the 1979-80 season when he had 56 goals.
It was a special season for Mogilny, and not only is it the best record in franchise history, but one of the greatest in NHL history. He is tied with Phil Esposito and Teemu Selanne for the fifth most goals scored in a season.
The record is held by Wayne Gretzky with 92 but there really haven't been any players across the NHL that has come relatively close. In fact, Mogilny and Selanne were the last to even score over 70 in a season, with Auston Matthews getting the closest with 69 in 2023-24.
A goal scorer like Mogilny is hard to find in today's NHL, and the Sabres just don't have that on the roster. Tage Thompson is the closest, but even his best season is only 47 goals, so this is a record that probably won't be threatened any time soon.
Career Points
While Mogilny had a great season with the Buffalo Sabres, Gilbert Perreault had the greatest career and played 17 seasons for Buffalo. That type of longevity certainly helps him own most of the skater career records; it isn't possible if he didn't have the talent.
One record in particular that stands out is the career points, which stands at 1,326 and is 522 more points than the next player on the list, which was Dave Andreychuk.
The reason this is a record that is going to stand for probably at least the next decade is because players don't have 15+ season careers with the same team anymore. Right now, the closest player to this record is Rasmus Dahlin with 360 points. However, if he keeps his current points pace and plays another 10 seasons, he would only have 874 points.
Wins by a head coach
This is a record that won't be broken any time soon because the coach who owns it is still adding to his total. The record belongs to Lindy Ruff, who has 607 career wins with the Sabres and has 397 more wins than the next coach, which was Scotty Bowman.
Ruff returned to the Sabres last summer to try and end the playoff drought that started with him, as the last time Buffalo made the playoffs was in 2011. It remains to be seen how patient the Sabres will be with their head coach, and another bad season could force them to make a change.
However, if the Sabres bounce back and make the playoffs, Ruff probably remains for the next few seasons and maybe even breaks 700.
