If you look up the word "success," the definition is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. But let's be real, everyone has their own definition of success. Whether it's short-term or long-term, it's a concept that can be used in many different ways and in various situations
For the Buffalo Sabres, it's safe to say is has been a successful 2025-26 season. Despite starting off slow and being in last place in the Eastern Conference, the Sabres did not look back. Not only did they break the playoff drought after 14 seasons, but they also won the Atlantic Division. Imagine saying that back before the season started.
It doesn't seem real but it is, and the club will host the Boston Bruins to open the first round this weekend. But going forward, it seems like the bar is set. Now it's time for the club to build on this season.
What's on the horizon for the Sabres in future years?
Regardless of what happens in the postseason, it's very hard to say it wasn't a successful season for Buffalo. To go on the run they did with how the season started was incredible to watch. Of course, head coach Lindy Ruff and general manager Jarmo Kekáláinen deserve part of the credit as well. What they have done to turn this ship around should not be ignored.
I'm curious though, what do fans think a successful season will look like? Not just this year but for the next handful of years, as well. Let's look at the different scenarios.
Scenario 1: Making the playoffs is always the baseline goal
The first scenario is making the playoffs each season. Obviously, to win the Stanley Cup, you need to make the playoffs first. So for the next few years, will fans be happy if they just made the playoffs and see what happens? The end goal is to win Lord Stanley's Cup but I will talk about that later on.
Scenario 2: Buffalo winning at least one or two rounds
Our next scenario is getting some experience and winning one or two rounds. It's a gauntlet competing for any sports championship but in my opinion, the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy in sports to win. For a young team like Buffalo, getting the experience could be beneficial for them moving forward.
Scenario 3: The Sabres capturing their first championship
Last but not least, winning the Stanley Cup would be the pinnacle outcome in terms of having a successful year. Some fans may think that's the next step and that's fair. But with how young this team is and it's the first time in over a decade they're in the postseason, that could be a bit extreme, at least in the imminent future.
So, what comes next for the Buffalo Sabres?
Here's what I think is a successful season for Buffalo: For the next couple years, it should be playoffs or bust. Try and get some experience because the further you go, the more it wears on the players with the physicality. As I said before, getting those postseason games under their belt will benefit the players, especially the younger contributors or others who haven't experienced playoff hockey.
Regarding long-term, going past the second round should be the goal. Whatever happens after that will happen but I think going forward, winning a round or two will be a success with hope one of those appearances will result in bringing a title home to Western New York.
Now listen, this team could very well go on an epic run and maybe win it all this year. That's always the dream once a playoff berth is clinched.
But I do believe that my scenario for the coming years makes sense: Make the playoffs consistently, advance a few rounds and see what happens from there.
