When Alex Tuch was dealt to the Washington Capitals in a sign-and-trade, the Buffalo Sabres lost more than a reliable top-six winger coming off a 30-goal season. They also lost one of the biggest leaders in their locker room and a player who had become a big part of the identity they were building.
Buffalo spent more than a decade looking for some kind of consistency and identity, and Tuch was one of the few players who fully embraced playing in the city. He became an important part of the community largely because the Sabres were his boyhood team and he was a big part of the Sabres, which finally ended their 14-year playoff drought. This makes it very hard to replace his leadership, which is going to be extremely hard and could create an identity problem.
The Sabres need someone to step up in Tuch’s absence
During his time with the Sabres, there was a lot to like. He was a leader in the dressing room; he played in the top six, and he was a big-bodied winger. That’s extremely hard to replace, especially when he went out of his way to show just how much he loved the city of Buffalo. For the fans, it was hard to see him go, but with the big ticket that he signed, it made sense.
The Sabres have players like Tage Thompson and Josh Doan, who did benefit from having someone like Tuch on their line who could do some of the harder work and open up space. However, now they will get a chance to show what they can do without Tuch alongside them. They've made it clear they believe young players on the roster can help fill the gap. Peyton Krebs, Jack Quinn, Jiri Kulich, Noah Ostlund, and Konsta Helenius are all expected to take on bigger roles, and there is plenty of talent among that group.
In terms of leadership, losing Tuch is a hard pill to swallow. He was a veteran who could hold players accountable. But now that he is gone, someone else is going to need to step up and take on that role alongside Rasmus Dahlin. The best option would likely be Thompson. He is one of the longest-tenured players on the roster and the main focus of the offense. If he steps up and holds players accountable while also putting the puck in the net. It may have an even bigger impact on the locker room than Tuch had.
Nevertheless, losing Tuch is going to sting. Every team goes through it; it’s just how the locker room and organization handle it. After breaking the 14-year playoff streak, they can’t take a massive step backward and lose all the progress that they made. The team will need to move on from the loss of Tuch and prove that last year wasn’t a fluke.
