Eventually, career records do fall. However, the single-season record for goals, which was set by Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93, is one that could potentially never be broken.
Alexander Mogilny scored 76 goals and somehow still did not lead the NHL alone
It was a remarkable year for Mogilny, as he had 76 goals in 77 games, but somehow didn't own the NHL lead that season, as Teemu Selanne would score the same exact total. That total was the fifth most in NHL history, and no player in the NHL has surpassed that total since then.
During the 1992-93 season, Mogilny would score 49 even-strength goals and 27 power-play goals. He began that season with a hat trick in the first game of the season, and it would be one of five games in which he scored three.
Towards the end of that season, Mogilny did slow down a bit and had six straight games without a goal, and was sitting at 74. He would end up scoring two in the regular season finale to move his total up to 76. Mogilny needed both of those goals as he was one behind Selanne going into that final game, and the Winnipeg Jets' forward would score in his final game.
That regular season total is tied for the fifth-best in NHL history, and no player has scored more than 76 since that season. The closest to reaching it was Auston Matthews when he had 69 goals during the 2023-24 season.
That is why this record by Mogilny is probably the most unlikely to be broken for the Buffalo Sabres. In fact, over the past five seasons, there have been only four times a player has even broken 60 in a single season.
No Buffalo Sabres' player has been close to challenging Alexander Mogilny's record
The mark set by Alexander Mogilny is 20 more than Danny Gare, who is second when he scored 56 in 1979-80. Since Mogilny set the franchise record, Tage Thompson has been the closest over the past three decades, when he had 47 during the 2022-23 season.
When considering that Thompson has been the closest in recent history and was still nearly 30 goals behind Mogilny, it just shows how unlikely it will be for fans to see another Sabres player score that much in a single season.
All records are meant to be broken, and there may come a day when Alexander Mogilny's record is broken, especially if the NHL continues to add games to the season. However, the fact that there hasn't been any player, with the Sabres or across the entire NHL, who has surpassed that total shows this is a record that will be around for a while.
