The Sabres inked forward Jason Zucker to a 1 year, $5 million dollar contract before the start of the season. Hoping he could fill an offensive need, he continues to exceed expectations as this season looks like a revitalization for the 32-year-old's career.
A key veteran presence
Not only does Zucker currently sit second on the team in points with 31 (15 goals, 16 assists), but he is also a great locker room presence for one of the NHL's youngest rosters. Although the team regularly changes lines, Zucker has served as an excellent mentor for the likes of rookie Jiri Kulich and Zach Benson. Simply having him in the room is great for the young guys to be around.
After recording his third career hattrick, and first in a Sabres uniform this past Thursday in a 6-5 overtime loss versus the Colorado Avalanche, Sabres fans are realizing more than ever the need to extend Zucker's contract.
Despite the loss, his four-point performance shows just how much of an impact he's been. With a team lead, seven power play goals, Zucker continues to put forth his best effort as the team hopes to get back in the playoff race before it's too late.
Overall, there really hasn't been anything to complain about Zucker's game. He is producing not only by putting pucks in the back of the net, but is clearly a great mentor both on and off the ice. Zucker will look to continues his offensive prowess by adding to his already team-leading, seven power play goals. For now, Sabres fans should continue to enjoy Zucker's presence.
What remains?
As the Sabres inch closer to the halfway point of the season, fans certainly were hoping for a different start to what they have received. However, can the team turn it around or will they be in danger of missing the playoffs for a 14th straight season.
This remains to be seen, however it would be in the team's best interest to lock Jason Zucker in to an extension sooner rather than later. Surely other teams in need of a top-nine forward see his recent success.
Fans definitely don't want a repeat of prior trade deadlines where they see Buffalo trade veteran's for future and unproven assets. GM Kevyn Adams should extend Zucker now while he can.
