Fans of the Buffalo Sabres haven't had much to cheer about over the past few years but watching Tage Thompson play has been one of the few bright spots. It was a slow start to his career with only 18 goals through his first 145 NHL regular season games.
However, the past four seasons has been a different story and he has been the team's top goal-scorer with an average of 39.5 goals per season over that stretch. He has broken the 40 goal mark in two of those seasons and if he does that again this season, he will join some of the franchise's all-time greats.
Entering this season, Thompson ranks 15th in franchise history in goals scored and could be moving ahead of players like Ric Seiling (176) and Phil Housley (178) rather quickly this season as Thompson is not far behind at 173.
Tage Thompson could reach 200 career goals this season with the Buffalo Sabres
After these two players, Thompson will turn his sights to a group of three players that are within six goals. This group includes Alexander Mogilny (211), Don Luce (216), and Jason Pominville (217) with the last one current ranked 10th in franchise history.
Thompson certainly could catch Pominville and bump him out of that spot but will need to have a career-season. If Thompson reachs 45 goals this season, which is two fewer than his career-high, then the Buffalo Sabres' forward will break into the Top 10 and solidfy his legacy with the franchise.
With Thompson under contract through the 2029-30 season, he has a chance to continue to move up the record books in goals scored. He is in the prime of his career and doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon and could find himself in the Top 5 before he knows it.
