There is a strong argument to be made that the Buffalo Sabres roster has more depth and is more balanced currently than what they had last season. The big move was the trade of JJ Peterka, who is an excellent player, but the return of Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan helps bring more balance and hopefully helps Owen Power in particular with Kesslering next to him.
While training camp is quickly approaching, the Sabres front office could still make some more moves to create competition and potentially improve the roster even more. There are a number of players currently still looking for teams for the upcoming season that the Sabres could sign to professional tryouts (PTOs).
By signing them to a PTO, the risk is minimal from the Sabres and would give them a chance to get a closer look at some of these players and if they truly can help the team this season get back to the playoffs.
4 players the Buffalo Sabres might consider signing to PTOs before training camp
Jack Roslovic
The best player probably still available at this point is center Roslovic, who spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes. He had one of the best seasons of his career as he tied a career-high in goals with 22 while adding 17 assists.
He is a player that is generating interest around the league, including from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Sabres could certainly use some depth at the center position and being able to add a player that is considering one of their rivals would just be an additional bonus for Buffalo.
Max Pacioretty
The next player also has ties to the Toronto Maple Leafs as Max Pacioretty played for Toronto last season. He would appear in 37 games and had five goals and eight assists but looked much better in the playoffs after recording three goals and five assists in only 11 games.
Pacioretty is older and will be turning 37 years old this upcoming season. It remains to be seen if he wants to continue his career or is considering retirement. If he does continue, then it probably would be with a contender that right now Buffalo needs to prove that before they are viewed in that light.
However, if Pacioretty doesn't have those options and wants to continue playing he could be a good veteran option to add to this forwards group, especially with how productive he was during the playoffs.
Robby Fabbri
Another option to add to the center position might be Robby Fabri, who played 44 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season. While this past season was a struggle, the season before that with the Detroit Red Wings he had 32 points after scoring 18 goals.
Fabbri would be an interesting addition for the Sabres as he can still score at a good rate with a career shooting percentage of 14.4% and over the past three seasons has been at 16.8%. With these PTO type options, these are long shots to make the roster but Fabbri has a shot that could certainly help his chances to earn a spot on the Sabres roster.
Alexandar Georgiev
One of the biggest question marks right now for the Buffalo Sabres is at goalie and while they did add Alex Lyon, he should be viewed more as a depth option and not necessarily a great solve if Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen struggles this season. The Sabres do have Devon Levi waiting in the AHL as well as an option but it wouldn't hurt to bring in another goalie to compete and add depth.
One of those options could be Alexandar Georgiev, who at one time was considered one of the bright young stars at the position. He would lead the league in wins in 2022-23 and 2023-24 with 78 total over that stretch.
However, the past two seasons have been a struggle and he was traded to the San Jose Sharks during the season. He would finish the season 7-19-4 as a member of the Sharks and a save percentage of only .875 and a goals against average of 3.88.
It is far from a guarantee that Georgiev could return to form but if he does, it gives the Buffalo Sabres a great option with all the questions they have at the position.
