As Buffalo looks to close things out after the break, there is one question that might be on Sabres fan's minds. Can they make a run towards the playoffs?

With four wins in their last five games, the Sabres sit at 49 points with 28 games to play. They are 12 points from the Detroit Red Wings, who currently hold the second wild card spot in the east.

They are currently in last place in the east but could still make a run. With Owen Power performing strong on defense and both Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson scoring consistently, they may have the pieces in place.

They currently have 11 games against teams in the eastern conference that are ahead of them in the standings. If they are able to win at least half of those 11 games that would put them at 63 points.

If they can at least get a point by forcing overtime in the other half, that would put them at 68 points. Taking points away from those in their way could help Buffalo make a run going forward, and also keep some of their key players off the trade block.

Last season, the Washington Capitals held the last wild card spot in the east with 91 points. It would be a tall order for the Sabres to get there, but if they continue on their streak it could allow them a chance.

If Buffalo wins more then half of their games, they will have 79 points.

What's important is for them to at least tie the majority of the other 14 games. That would put them well over 80 points and may put them in the thick of the playoff race.

What's important is for them to stay on top of things, and continue to push like they have during this last stretch of games.

Backup goalie James Reimer spoke after their fourth straight win in against the Blue Jackets. “It’s just guys laying down, putting their body on the line and doing whatever it takes. So that’s a big reason for our success." Which is what the Sabres must continue doing if they want to make a playoff run.

The Sabres have not been to the postseason since 2011, and it may be a longshot for them to make it, but if they continue to press on the ice, they could at the very least be back in the mix.

If they fall short but go on a run, that could give them momentum for next season.
