There is no question Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is main goalie for Buffalo. He is currently at 12-12 on the year and is coming off a record breaking season a year ago. However, the two goalies who have stepped in for him during the season have struggled thus far.
James Reimer and Devon Levi only have three wins between the two and have both struggled between the pipes as replacements for Luukkonen. Levi was sent down to the Rochester Americans and has only played in one game since December.
Reimer, has bounced from both the Sabres and Anaheim Ducks this year. He lost both games he appeared with Anaheim this year. Levi has a save percentage of .871 while Reimer is currently at .891.
If the Sabres want to move up in the standings, they made need to look at other options as a backup goalie. The question is, where and who? Levi is still a viable third option and could still be brought up in emergency situations when needed. He could continue to work on his mechanics and skills while with Rochester.
The Sabres have a few options in free agency or via trade for a backup to Luukkonen
Martin Jones could be a viable option if they wish to put James Reimer back on waivers. Last season he had an 11-8 record for the Toronto Maple Leafs with a save percentage of .902. He has won 236 games in his career and has played in 60 games in the postseason.
During his career, he assisted the San Jose Sharks in reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 2016. He would have the experience needed to aid a young team and assist Luukkonen when needed. As a free agent, his contract also would not hurt Buffalo too much.
Another option would be either trade for or buy the contract of Malcolm Subban. He currently plays for the Belleville Senators of the AHL. He was with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season for, $775,000 and his cap hit would be affordable for Buffalo.
In 2021, he provided a spark off the bench for Buffalo and would a popular addition if they choose to trade for him. If Buffalo chooses to go that route, they will only need to sign him to a one-year deal.
Felix Sandstrom of Rochester is also currently an option. The Swedish player is currently at 6-4-1 and Buffalo could look for a youthful option as a backup.
Buffalo has very little railway to move up in the standings. If they wish to make a move, a backup to Luukkonen may be vital.
