The Buffalo Sabres losing streak has reached eight games last night as they lost to the New York Rangers. It doesn't get any easier for the team as Buffalo will have a back-to-back this weekend as they will face the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs with both of those games on the road.
The main source to Buffalo's struggles
A huge reason why Buffalo is not doing so well, general manager Kevyn Adams lack of improving the roster. Yes, he did improve the bottom six with acquisitions such as Jason Zucker, Beck Malenstyn, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel. But in terms of the top six, it has been another disappointing season for the Sabres youth.
While Tage Thompson is having a bounce back season, players like JJ Peterka, Dylan Cozens, Jack Quinn and others are not performing up to their standards. Peterka, Cozens and Quinn COMBINED only have 15 goals scored.
Buying into the current roster was a HUGE mistake
Back in July, I wrote an article about Adams buying into his top six. Everyone had different opinions on it and only the season would give us an answer. Right now, those who remained skeptical were right all along. Even with Zucker and Ryan McLeod in the mix, Adams is getting some backlash and it's well deserved.
Should Buffalo fire Adams?
Even with losing their last eight games, Buffalo is still for some reason not making any changes. Recently, the Sabres GM held a press conference where he said Buffalo isn't a free agency destination and how taxes are a thing and not palm trees.
It seemed like those comments fired up the fanbase even more and not in a good way. In my opinion, those comments were unecessary. Digging into his quotes, I understood what meant but he definitely could've said things differently.
Not improving the top six is coming back to bite Adams and with their next two games, it's very possible the Sabres losing streak could reach 10 games and it's all because of the general manager's failure to add on to the skill.
Yes Buffalo is a young team and there will be slumps. But for a team who has lost eight in a row and could miss the playoffs for 14 straight years, frustration is boiling over because of the lack of moves.
