Two things can be true at the same time. The Buffalo Sabres are having a remarkable season. Also, that will lead to many tough decisions in the offseason. But those are good decisions to be making as they look to be a team that is more than just a feel-good story this year.
They have many free agents and possible players they will be looking to deal as the summer heats up. The most important free agent is a player who has played his way to an important role with the organization.
Center Peyton Krebs is a restricted free agent and deserves a deal with the Buffalo Sabres
Krebs, who has shown that sometimes patience is the best route over the past two years, has been a vital part of the Sabres turnaround. He's already posted a career-high 30 points in 2025-26.
More importantly though, he has been becoming a steady player and shown aggressiveness when the team needs it most. His grit is continuing to shine through on the ice. He was one of the players who found his way by fighting in the win against the Lightning.
His play and aggressive style should be important part for the Sabres moving forward. Compared to unrestricted free agent Alex Tuch, an smaller-role RFA like Krebs will also be a cheaper chip to keep. Tuch is due for a large contract extension.
Krebs, however, has a more aggressive style of play compared to Tuch's finesse. The Sabres have benefited from strength and assertiveness compared to finesse this season. Plus, Krebs is four years younger than Tuch, and may have a longer-term future with the team.
Krebs also may provide more bang for the buck than Zach Benson, who is also looking for new contract as an RFA. The emergence of Josh Doan and the trade for Tanner Pearson may give them more depth involving the wingers and keeping a center like Krebs could bring some added value given his importance to the fourth line, as well as his ability to move up the lineup when needed.
The Sabres have 16 games remaining. What may be important for Krebs is to showcase how important he can be. He has provided a strong spark alongside Tage Thompson but if he continues to put up improving numbers and show that key combativeness, it could lead to a nice payday.
The No. 1 goal for all involved at this moment is get that "X" by their names in the standings signifiying a clinched postseason berth. Then comes the playoffs. But there is no time in the NHL to savor the moment too long.
Decisions will need to be made and Peyton Krebs is a player worth looking at keeping long term.
