The Sabres just recently avoided arbitration and a huge question as to what to do at the goalie position after agreeing to terms with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The contract worth $4.75 million per year for five years. It was well deserved after Luukkonen's breakout season in 2023-24. In addition to his .910 save percentage, the 25-year-old had a career high five shutouts. Below is a breakdown of the shutouts.
1) 10/19/2023 - His first career shutout came in a 4-0 win at Keybank Center. Following the shutout, he commented on the feat saying, "It’s really a confidence booster for me and I’ve been waiting for a long time." Number of saves: 26
2) 01/15/2024 - His second career shutout led to the Sabres winning 3-0 over the San Jose Sharks. Jordan Greenway added an empty net goal in the third period. Number of saves: 28
3) 01/18/2024 - Luukkonen went on a tear grabbing his second straight shutout on the season against the Blackhawks winning 3-0. He had a save on a 2-1 opportunity against center Reese Johnson in the third period. Number of saves: 19
4) 02/13/2024 - A save percentage of 1.000 led to his fourth shutout and a 7-0 route of the Los Angeles Kings. Became first Sabre goalie with four shutouts in a year since Ryan Miller in 2011-12. Number of saves: 33
5) 03/14/2024 - In his final shutout of the year, the standout goalie helped leaded Buffalo to 4-0 win over the Islanders and third straight victory. It was tenth victory during an impressive stretch of 14 games. Number of saves: 21
The Sabres have a long history of strong goalies. There most successful playoff runs have included such strong players between the pipes. If Luukkonen can repeat last season the playoff drought has a good chance of ending next season.
