Will JJ Peterka build off from his sophomore season?
JJ Peterka went on a tear towards the end of last season, how will be perform under Lindy Ruff next year?
There were not many bright spots for the Buffalo Sabres offensively last season. One bright spot was the breakout play of right winger, JJ Peterka. The 22-year-old had career highs in many categories. He also should factor into Lindy Ruff's plans entering next year.
His 2023/2024 campaign saw him score 28 goals on the season. JJ had four games where he scored two goals and in March had four straight games that saw him find the back of the net. He added 22 assists for an 82-point total for the year.
After the end of the season, Peterka commented on his performance throughout the year. "I think this year just being more of a pro, being in better position–I think that helped me then on the other end, on offense, to score more goals," he said to the media.
In addition to his career high point total, Peterka was also the only Sabre to play in all 82 games on the year. He also had a career high in blocks at 18. The German native should be primed and ready entering the offseason.
During Alex Tuch's interview in the offseason, he commented on Peterka's potential. “I don’t think he’s even come close to reaching his full potential. And I don’t even think he’s even close to scratching the surface either," commented one of the leaders of Buffalo.
Peterka will be entering his third full year for the Sabres. He is signed through the 2025 season but will be due to for a long-term deal. Peterka's cap hit is currently at .98%. If he can duplicate last year's performance, he should be due for a high pay day from Buffalo.
Having another strong winger will be important for them to end their playoff drought. Peterka had five game winning goals, which was second on the team to Tuch.
