If the Buffalo Sabres are able to advance to the conference finals, it will be off the skates of their captain. Ramsus Dahlin had a historic performance in Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Trailing in the series 3-2, Dahlin joined Derek Roy (2006) and John Tucker (1988), becoming the only players in the franchise to record five points in a playoff game. As a result, the Sabres were able to emerge with a 8-3 victory in Montreal.

He also made NHL history while helping lead the Sabres to a chance at Game 7 by scoring five points as a defenseman in an elimination game. He also became just the ninth defenseman in the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs to have five or more points in single game during the postseason.

The performance being at historical levels is exactly what the Sabres needed. Leaders and captains show up when needed most. Dahlin proved that facing elimination.

Ramsus Dahlin must parlay his standout performance into another big game if the Sabres are going to advance past Canadiens

This could be a prime example of what is ahead in Buffalo for the final game of the series. It has gone back and forth and the Sabres may need another historic night from Dahlin to move on.

What was most remarkable and important leading to Game 7 was the generated chances and passing of Dahlin. He had four assists at Montreal, which proves he has a vision on the ice that is invaluable for the team.

Having vision while on the ice is important for someone to be able to take command both on the offensive and defensive end. In addition to his historic Game 6, Dahlin had four blocks in the fourth game, which was 3-2 win for the Sabres.

The biggest issue and controversy for the Sabres have been going back in forth at goalie. It has not affected Dahlin's play. Having a steady defenseman and captain throughout the series and in Game 7 can be what pushes them past Montreal.

Now does Dahlin have one more high octane night? The Canadiens and Sabres are very evenly matched, which is evident this series. Having a player step up like Dahlin did is extremely important for Game 7 on Monday night.

In 2006, the last time a Sabre player had that many points in the playoff game they got to the Eastern Conference Finals. Derek Roy is remembered fondly to due this feat.

Dahlin and the Sabres can hope to have that same showing as they enter Game 7 preparations.
