The 2026 free-agent discussion for the Sabres is nearing its conclusion, with Patrick Kane being the only marquee name being seriously linked to Buffalo. Soon, the front office will begin to turn the page to next year and start to evaluate who can hit free agency in the summer of 2027.
They traded for a center last season that will now be playing for a contract entering next year. Sam Carrick came over in March trade from the New York Rangers. The Sabres absorbed his contract from the Rangers.
He played in only 13 games before a left arm injury sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season and most of the playoffs. It is unfortunate as he had provided a physical spark at the center position.
Carrick dished out 20 hits and was able to score five goals during his limited time on the ice for the Blue and Gold. Now, his health will be important if he can secure a new contract.

The Sabres ramp up offseason programs in September and him being on the ice for a few morning skates will be important to proving his worth to the team throughout training camp and during the preseason.
The last few years, Sabres such as Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs had questions marks before entering free agency. But both played there way to contract extensions. Carrick is similar.
Finding even more depth will be a big part for Buffalo moving forward and, if Carrick can show why he deserves an extension, he may get one before entering the market next summer.
The Sabres recently lost Jordan Greenway, who was a fourth-line contributor and physical presence. But he struggled with staying healthy and was ultimately traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. Benson has brought some physicality but does not necessarily fill the enforcer role.
Carrick was injured during a fight last year. He clearly wanted to be a part of the scuffles while on the ice. He did have five penalty minutes during the crazy 8-7 Sabres victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning in March, and also provided a goal in that memorable contest.
His contract currently carries a $1 million salary. It would be cap friendly if extended at the number. But that is up to him if he can hope to get a higher salary or equivalent.
Depth at center is not an issue for the Sabres currently. Each player outside of Tage Thompson needs to separate themselves from the pack. Carrick has a chance to do that. but getting (and staying) healthy will be important for him in early parts of next season.
