James Reimer is no stranger to the National Hockey League. After starting his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2010-2016, Reimer has been a journeymen. He has bounced around but recently, James is winning games for the Buffalo Sabres. With goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen struggling recently, Reimer has been head coach Lindy Ruff's go-to guy.
Reimer is 5-0 in his last five games and is one of the main reasons why the Sabres are winning games. While it's unfortunate this season will most likely will end with no playoffs once again, let's look forward to next season. Should the Sabres bring back Reimer?
Three of those wins were against playoff teams as Reimer and Buffalo have beaten Ottawa twice, Winnipeg and Washington. While he allowed five goals in the victory over the Capitals, James held the Jets to three goals and in both meetings against the Senators, he allowed only two goals.
It's not ideal having a 37 year old playing over a 26 year old who signed a multi-year contract extension in the offseason, but I would not be opposed if Buffalo brought back Reimer for another season or two. You can continue to let Devon Levi develop in Rochester and it can also take the pressure off of Luukkonen.
If UPL struggles like he is now, you put Reimer in net and you have a solid veteran in between the pipes. After starting 2-8-2, James is now 7-8-2 with a SV% of .900 and a 3.00 GAA. With where he is in the stage of his career, it shouldn't be too bad of a contract.
But with how UPL has struggled this season and Levi being a critical part of Rochester, Buffalo should consider keep Reimer around for another year or two.
