The Buffalo Sabres appear to be rutterless and are spiraling quicker than would prefer. They are not lacking in many areas in terms of physicality and consistent play. They are also lacking in positive storylines for the Sabres faithful to latch onto.

They need to begin to look at ways to improve their place in the standings but in the Western New York area. One player that could do both is forward Justin Bailey. The Western New York Native is currently under contract with the San Jose Sharks but could be a value pick and add depth to Buffalo's offense.

The right winger currently is on a one-year deal with the Sharks and is playing in the AHL for the San Jose Barracuda. He would a cheap option for Buffalo if they looked his way. Last season, he had 5 goals 9 assists for the Sharks. He also had a three-game point streak in early December of 2023.

For his effort last year Bailey was nominated for the Masterston Trophy by San Jose.

The Masterton Trophy is awarded by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association to the player who is deemed to exhibit the most perseverance and commitment to hockey. It is a honor that shows Bailey's value and leadership qualities both on and off the ice.

The forward was initially drafted by Buffalo and spent his first three NHL seasons with the Sabres

Being drafted in 2015, he saw action in 52 games representing his hometown. He had five goals and eight assists during his tenure with the team. He had a game winning goal in February of 2017 against the Ottawa Senators. He also tallied 54 hits during his time in Buffalo.

Trading for him would not be expensive and they may be able to move possibly underperforming Peyton Krebs for Bailey and a draft pick for the future of Buffalo.

He currently has played in 20 games for the Barracuda scoring five goals and four assists. He has a veteran demeaner and would be a welcome addition to Buffalo if they wish to make the call for him to return.

The Sabres need to look at not only what can get them out of the slump they are in but a reason for the Sabres fandom to continue to come to games night and night out. Signing a Buffalo native and fan favorite in Bailey may be one such way.
