There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Sabres could possibly move JJ Peterka in the offseason. In my opinion, that would be a HUGE mistake by the franchise. Peterka will be a restricted free agent after the 2025/2026 season, so he will be due for a new contract.
If I'm Kevyn Adams, I'm doing everything possible to keep JJ around. In my opinion, he's earned himself a huge payday. Peterka is coming off another productive season which saw him score 27 goals and recorded 41 assists for 68 points on the season. His 68 points were tied for second most on the team alongside Rasmus Dahlin.
Why the Sabres NEED to keep him
It is crucial Adams keeps JJ around for many years to come. While he could be used in a potential trade to acquire other talent, Peterka is a conerstone of the franchise and has improved in each season he's played during his young career.
He is only 23 years old and I think the sky is limit for him. That is why Buffalo cannot afford to lose the German forward. I would not be surprised if Peterka scored 40 goals at some point during his career. However, it is up to JJ whether or not he wants to stay in Buffalo.
Ever since he's been in Buffalo, it's been nothing but losing seasons or no playoffs. As Sabres fans know all too well unfortunately, previous players who played for the franchise left for new beginnings and have found success, including winning the Stanley Cup.
Losing Peterka would be a MAJOR issue and would set the club back even more. It is imperative for Buffalo to extend JJ if he's willing to stay. Keep him around and hopefully, Adams can add more talent in the offseason.
14 years of no playoff hockey in Buffalo is enough. It's time for Adams to step up and turn things around. Extending Peterka would be a great start.
