Quarterback Geno Smith said it (somewhat) well: "They wrote me off, I ain't write back though."
While the Buffalo Sabres were generally written off this season, the team nonetheless wrote back figuratively and literally. Not only did their performance prove a lot of hockey commentators wrong this season, but their social media admin also had some fun with the pre-season predictions gone wrong.
But those aren't the only people that have answered for their take on the 2025-26 Sabres.
Wyatt Russell finds out why you should never bet against Buffalo
Wyatt Russell, the former hockey goaltender turned actor who has appeared in several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like Thunderbolts* and the upcoming crossover film Avengers: Doomsday, has recently made the rounds on social media for a bet he made with regard to the Sabres' performance.
During an appearance on "Sabres Live" with host Brian Duff and ex-Sabres goaltender Martin Biron, Russell clarified what the bet entailed. While on a chat with co-workers for his cocktail brand Lake Hour, which he co-founded with film producer/Buffalo sports fan Richard Peete, he said that "if the Sabres make the playoffs, I'll jump into Lake Erie and like chug a Lake Hour out of a beer sabre."
When the Sabres made the playoffs, the world was quick to remind Russell of his bet. Note that the term "world" includes former Sabre Rob Ray, who reminded Russell of his bet and that a cold and recently-thawed Lake Erie awaited.
The good news? He made good on his promise, bringing his Lake Hour brand and the Sabres social media team to the shores of Lake Erie to fulfill his bet.
The bad news? Banging the drum for Game 1 of the Sabres' first-round series against Boston wasn't included in the bet, though that doesn't rule an appearance from Russell out. In fact, no confirmation has been made as to who will bang the drum to open Buffalo's first postseason appearance in a decade-and-a-half.
Either way, Russell's plunge in Lake Erie goes to show that the Sabres have done well to prove people wrong this season. And who knows, that could easily continue into the postseason.
