Buffalo Sabres Weekly Three Stars: Feb. 2

facebooktwitterreddit

The Buffalo Sabres fell in all three of the team’s games last week. First, it was a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Flames; next, a 4-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, and finally, a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. The Western Canada road swing is over with the team going 0-3, and next up, the Buffalo Sabres will move across the country to face the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday before returning home from the road trip.

Despite the recent losses, there were still several players on the Buffalo Sabres roster who stood out last week.

1. Chris Stewart

First up: right winger Chris Stewart, who had points in two of the three Buffalo Sabres games this week. Stewart had a pair of goals in Friday’s loss to the Canucks, and also had a goal against the Flames.

He had nine shots on goal, including five against Vancouver, and played 52:16 through the three games. Stewart also had three hits and one blocked shot in the past week.

2. Tyler Myers

Next up is Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers. The 25-year-old had one goal and one assist this week. He had two shots, three attempts blocked and two missed shots.

Myers also had three hits and 12 blocked shots while playing a total of 73:05 through three games.

3. Tyler Ennis

Finally, center Tyler Ennis, who had two points – both assists – in three games.

More from Sabres News

Ennis had six shots on goal, including three in each game against Edmonton and Vancouver.

He also had a team-high five hits in Thursday’s game against Edmonton, tied with Nicolas Deslauriers for the most of any Buffalo Sabres player that game. Ennis also had one blocked shot.

It’s difficult to pick even three stars of the week for a team that’s struggling as much as the Buffalo Sabres are at this point — but I’ve tried. No honorable mentions this week; though there were a few players who had points or memorable moments here or there, including captain Brian Gionta‘s two assists against Edmonton, or Matt Hackett‘s first NHL game of the season — I didn’t feel anyone else really merited an honorable mention this week, so there you have it.

Who else would you have considered for one of this week’s three stars?

Next Up for the Buffalo Sabres…

Coming up this week for the Buffalo Sabres are four games that will see the team face two Eastern Conference foes and a pair of Western Conference teams.

First up is a game against the Canadiens in Montreal on Tuesday to finish up the road trip, before the Buffalo Sabres return home to finish the week with a trio of home games.

Former Buffalo Sabres co-captain Steve Ott visits Buffalo on Thursday with the St. Louis Blues. Former Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff then visits Buffalo on Saturday with the Dallas Stars, before the red-hot New York Islanders come into town on Sunday for a matinee match-up.

The Buffalo Sabres head into the coming week on a 14-game losing streak. Inevitably, that streak has to end at some point — it’s just a matter of when. As someone once said: even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. Will one of this week’s four games see the Buffalo Sabres finally break this streak? If not, they’ll break the NHL losing record of 17 games.

Here’s to hoping.
