Buffalo Sabres Draft: Jack Eichel Leaving Decision To Heart

The Buffalo Sabres are inside of twenty days away from knowing if they will be drafting Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel.  Who they are drafting is still just as up in the air as who will win the 2015 Stanley Cup.

Of course the Chicago Blackhawks are the favorite to win the Stanley Cup (in my humble opinion) and Jack Eichel should prepare his cell phone carrier to switch his area code to 716.

Of course, unlike his counterpart Connor McDavid – Jack Eichel doesn’t have to make the NHL his destination next season.  Because he is an NCAA player, he could choose to return to Boston University and avenge his loss at the National Championship with the Terriers.

Jack Eichel isn’t guaranteeing that he will be in the NHL next season, he is leaving the matter up to the heart.

But how much of his heart is always in Buffalo?  According to the Puck Daddy article linked above, Eichel thinks the city of Buffalo is a nice place.

“I’m just getting a feel for the city, meeting a lot of people. Obviously, everyone’s really welcoming here.” Eichel on Buffalo

There is a large salary on the table for Jack Eichel with an entry level deal that will most certainly lead to a much larger contract that will make him a very rich young man.  He has accomplished just about everything in the NCAA that a player can accomplish – as a freshman.

So what reason does he have to say that he will let his heart decide on where to go?  One only has to look as far back as the NHL Draft lottery and the expression on the face of his counterpart when it was revealed that the Edmonton Oilers would be selecting number one overall.

Might he be undecided on what to do when the hockey season rolls around – because he thinks there is a chance that the Edmonton Oilers will use the first pick in the NHL Draft?

I mean, the NHL can’t publicly say it, but you have to know that the entire marketing division uttered the same grown when they found out that their new face would be playing in the Mountain Time Zone, and on a team that went from the dynasty of the Stanley Cup circuit to the dynasty of first overall draft picks.

If Edmonton does indeed draft Jack Eichel – does he stand more of a chance of allowing his heart to lead him back to the Terriers and the chance for a National Championship?  Remaining property of the Oilers until he graduates college – does he max out his NCAA eligibility only to not have to play for Edmonton?

Would it be any different if he doesn’t want to come to Buffalo?

I think Jack Eichel is ready to come to the NHL – I think his destination come draft day will decide his fate – on whether or not he decides to stay in school.
