9. Don Cherry

Don Cherry – yes, that Don Cherry – is perhaps best-known nowadays for his time with CBC, his eccentric ties and suits, and his.. well, loud voice and well-voiced opinions. But before that, he acted in various capacities with the Rochester Americans.

Cherry played for the Rochester Americans between 1963 and 1969, as well as 1971-72. He went on to coach and general manage the team between 1972 and 1974.

When you look at the history of the Rochester Americans, it’s hard not to look at Don Cherry, which makes him well-deserving of a spot on this list.

He captained the team solo from 1967 until 1969, and shared captaincy prior to that in the 1965-66 season with Gerry Ehman and Dick Gamble (who we’ll get to later).

To this day, Cherry ranks 13th overall in Rochester Americans defensemen with 118 points (34-84) in 390 games.

He spent seven seasons with the team, a history that’s hard to ignore even if you wanted to. His time with the Amerks came mostly at the end of his playing career.

Cherry was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in the Class of 1987, just the second year.
