The Buffalo Sabres established the Rick Martin Memorial Award, or Rico for short, to recognize the franchise’s most complete player.

Who on the Buffalo Sabres most deserves the Rick Martin Award? While you may be tempted to vote for your favorite player, let’s first stop and think what the Rico stands for.

  1. On-ice excellence
  2. Resiliency
  3. Community service

Every single Buffalo Sabre has an equal chance of winning the award. Even Owen Power despite his playing just two NHL games. However, after reading the above criteria, you probably just narrowed your list to a few worthy candidates.

And since you’re part of the NHL’s most loyal fanbase that has been tested time and again throughout the last decade, you earned your right to vote for the player you feel deserves this prestigious award. But which Buffalo Sabre truly deserves it?

Buffalo Sabres fans should vote for the following player to win the Rick Martin Memorial Award…

The actual player varies from fan to fan. But you should vote for the player you felt performed the best overall in the three of the categories mentioned above.

When you think of the 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres, which player did you believe performed the best on the ice? And although they performed well in games, how did they fare in the other two categories?

Shift gears to resilience. Who do you believe faced more trials than any other Sabre this season yet still emerged stronger than they were back in October? I’m sure a few players popped into your mind.

And who performed their best off the ice and reached out to the City of Buffalo more than any other? Sometimes, the most obscure players on the team provide the greatest community impact. And those players at least deserve serious consideration for the award.

Odds are, you now have a few players on your shortlist. Mull them over and decide which player on your shortlist deserves the award. Cast your vote here and if you’re willing, let us know your choice in the comments.
