Just one month ago, Buffalo Sabres prospects Jack Quinn and J.J. Peterka ruled the AHL so much you could have called them the Atlantic Connection.

Okay, so it might be premature to give two young prospects with four games of combined NHL experience a spin-off nickname to the Buffalo Sabres famed French Connection. But it’s always fun to be optimistic and speculative.

Anyway, the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs continued for the Sabres AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, last night against the Laval Rocket. You know what happened: The Rocket thrashed the Amerks in a 6-1 beatdown.

Only J.J. Peterka scored before the Rocket poured it on with six unanswered points. Overall, it was a terrible showing for the Amerks, but Peterka still logged another goal, giving him five for the playoffs and 10 points overall.

While Peterka has been great, one needs ask themselves: What is going on with Jack Quinn? Like Peterka, Quinn won All-Rookie honors. Unlike Peterka, he was also named Rookie of the Year. Yet in eight playoff games, Quinn has two points and an astounding (-6) plus-minus.

Peterka has five goals and five assists and a (+2) plus-minus while teammate Arttu Ruotsalainen has been the most productive player on the ice. In the playoffs, he is enjoying an 11-point, eight-goal outing, while Peyton Krebs has nine assists in those games.

You can argue that Quinn may be helping the Amerks in ways that don’t appear on the stat sheet, but he’s not that type of player. Quinn’s productivity has come all season long in the scoring department, and he even showed those same flashes during his cameo with the Sabres this season.

Either way, it is a possible red flag for the Sabres if this trend continues into October. Right now, there is no reason to sound the alarm bells. But it is a situation worth monitoring as the Amerks series with the Rocket continues.
