The Buffalo Sabres kicked off their four game road trip with a victory against the Edmonton Oilers. Here are the three biggest takeaways from the contest.

The Buffalo Sabres are now 2-1-0 after defeating the Edmonton Oilers last night to start a four game road trip. Buffalo was under siege in the final period, but they were able to hold off a very good Oilers team.

First and foremost, the biggest takeaway was how amazing Eric Comrie played. As I said to start the article, the Sabres were under heavy fire against the Oilers and still found a way to win the game. Comrie was absolutely spectacular last night and was without a doubt the reason why Buffalo defeated the Oilers last night.

Even going back to the first period, Comrie was standing on his head. After the opening 20 minutes, the Oilers were outshooting the Sabres 15-7. Not bad, but not great, and Buffalo played much better in the second period. For the third period, Edmonton just kept on coming and outshot Buffalo 23-5. Yes, you read that right.

After 60 minutes of hockey, shots on goal were 48-24 in favor of Edmonton. At the end of the day, Buffalo won 4-2 but Comrie was the biggest reason why the Sabres were victorious.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender, defensemen, step up in upset win

Takeaway #2, Ilya Lyubushkin. Even though he didn’t come back for the third period because of an injury, he had an impact on the game. Buffalo signed Ilya to not only help out the blue line but having a physical presence and boy did he show that last night.

Lyubushkin had two booming hits last night and I feel like the Sabres missed him in the third because when he was out there before getting hurt, he was a difference maker for Buffalo.

Rasmus Dahlin continues to be impressive after scoring his 3rd goal of the season last night and that’s why he’s another takeaway for me. The last time a defenseman scored a goal in each three games their team has played to start the season, Victor Hedman did it a few years ago, putting Dahlin in pretty good company.

Rasmus continues to be impressive and the good news is this is only the third game of the season. If he can keep this up for another 79 games, it’s going to be fun to watch. The Sabres will be back in action Thursday night as they will take on the Flames will puck drop taking place at 9:30.
