I don’t often watch postgame shows in sports. Never interested in them. But last night, I did not want to turn off the Buffalo Sabres game.
Let’s face it: The Buffalo Sabres have had some horrific alternate uniforms over the years. Remember the old gold jersey and blue accents? Or what about the white Buffa-slug uniform that in my opinion made the Blue and Gold look like the Nashville Predators.
Overall, the Sabres have arguably one of the more iconic and historical looks in hockey, and that look should never change again. But they are one of just two teams I can think of in North American professional sports (the other being the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) who could radically redesign their colors and logo and look good doing it.
This is why, just as the Bucs are supposed to bust out the good old creamsicle uniforms in 2023 and hopefully keep them around as a third jersey forever, the Sabres need to be thinking along the same lines with the goathead jersey.
Buffalo Sabres need to keep goathead look as an alternate
I remember ranking the Sabres latest uniforms, and I placed the goatheads right behind the current threads. But I don’t know, that uniform looked so good on the ice that, even if the Sabres were still the Eight-Game Losing Streak version of themselves, I doubt I’d have turned that one off in disgust. Simply so I could admire the uniforms.
But it’s not just my own, personal love for the unis as to why they need to stick around. They point to one of the greatest eras in franchise history, where the Sabres went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1999. Just a few years later, they also enjoyed one of the most iconic Cinderella seasons.
The look, which reporters lambasted upon its debut in 1996, became legendary as time wore on. Much like the old creamsicles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which was at one point often regarded as the worst uniform in modern NFL history. Once the Sabres started winning in them, that criticism subsided.
And the goathead, whose name was initially supposed to be an insult, became legendary. It was one of very few radical redesigns that actually worked, and not only should it stick around as the third jersey, I wouldn’t even mind seeing the whites make a comeback an an alternate basis, too. Either way, it was refreshing to see the goathead return to the ice.
