What is going on with the Buffalo Sabres in March 2023?

Saying “The Buffalo Sabres are in a slump” is an understatement. A lot of stuff is going on with the Blue and Gold at the moment.

A lot. A lot is wrong with the Buffalo Sabres. To say Buffalo is in a slump is saying something. For the second game in a row, the Sabres have allowed seven goals. Here is a sad stat that I came up with.

I am no expert or anything, but that is not good. So, what is wrong with the Buffalo Sabres? In this article, I am going to tell you what I think is wrong with them. Enough wasting time, let’s get into it.

First and foremost, the defense is not good. Ever since Mattias Samuelsson went down, the defense has been awful to watch. It’s crazy how one player determines the direction of a team. Even though Buffalo still has Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power, Mattias is a huge part of the blue line and it’s showing.

Whether it’s defensive breakdowns or turnovers, Buffalo’s defense has been an issue all season, and is a huge reason why this team is in a bad slump at the wrong time. I know a lot of the defenders are still young and Kevyn Adams wants them to develop, but there are a couple of players who should not be on the team next season.

Another reason is goaltending. Going into the season, the Sabres goaltending was the biggest question mark. Even though each goalie has had good moments, it means nothing in the month of March as each all three goalies have been not good.

Now that Buffalo has Devon Levi, I’m sure he will play some games. But I fear for him because of the defense in front of him.

This is the main issue for me. They are overthinking most of the time. If you watch closely, Buffalo has a tendency to pass the puck way too many times. Especially on the power play. Whenever a player has the puck and has a great scoring chance, he will pass instead of taking the shot.

I don’t understand why this team loves to pass the puck when they have great chances. This team is so loaded up front but for some whatever reason, they choose to pass it and turning it over rather than trying to score.

These three things are what is wrong with the Buffalo Sabres. Again, they are young but you think they would adjust. I’m sure I missed some other stuff but for me, this is what is wrong with the Sabres.
