Buffalo Sabres prospect Jiri Kulich missed the first two playoff games for the Rochester Americans. Can he help them climb out of a 2-0 hole?

The Rochester Americans stumbled in their first two games against the Syracuse Crunch in the second round of the 2023 Calder Cup Playoff. Next to a remarkable pass from Tyson Kozak to Linus Weissbach that set up a subsequent score in Game 1, there’s really been nothing to cheer for.

Clearly, the Amerks were missing their leading goal scorer, and one of the Buffalo Sabres top prospects in Jiri Kulich. To compound things, they were also forced to go without another top scorer in Brandon Biro who, unlike Kulich, will miss the rest of the playoffs.

Kulich, who had 24 goals and 46 points this past season, has been an incredible asset on what has been a non-existent power play thus far for the Amerks his postseason. Rochester’s power play unit, which failed to convert a goal in their 2-0 loss to Syracuse last Saturday night despite having a man advantage for seven minutes in the second frame, is breathing a sigh of relief with Kulich scheduled to return.

Buffalo Sabres prospect should help reverse Amerks fortunes

One admirable trait in Jiri Kulich is the fact that, despite his high output in points this season for Rochester, he’s never satisfied with his performances. Talk to Kulich about how well he played this season, and he will be the first to point out his early season struggles, when playing defense didn’t come as easily to him as his offensive game.

Overall, you can expect Kulich to skate with a chip on his shoulder tonight, looking to prove to everyone that he can be a game-changer as the Amerks try to stave off elimination. If Kulich’s presence results in a win for Rochester, then they will have home ice advantage in Game 4, before returning to Syracuse for a Game 5 that will decide who gets a spot in the North Division Finals.
