The Buffalo Sabres will likely look to move winger Victor Olofsson this summer, and Jiri Kulich could be the one replacing him.

A few days ago, I asked who would replace Victor Olofsson, assuming the Buffalo Sabres indeed move the winger. Of course, I listed a few prospects, most notably Matt Savoie, Jiri Kulich, and Lukas Rousek.

In my latest lineup projection, I listed Savoie as the one lining up in Olofsson’s spot, but Jiri Kulich is definitely making his case to potentially beat out the ninth overall pick. In the Rochester Americans two wins over the Syracuse Crunch, Kulich has “only” scored two power play goals in Victor Olofsson fashion, so that alone makes sense to recall the rook into the NHL next season. And in case you missed it, check out Kulich’s latest power play goal for yourself:

Will Jiri Kulich end up in Victor Olofsson’s spot for the Buffalo Sabres?

Before we speculate too much, the Sabres must first move Olofsson. If general manager Kevyn Adams opts to hold onto him, or there is no trading partner, then Olofsson will likely remain on the roster. At least in the short term.

But even if the Sabres go that route, Olofsson must still win the job, and that could be tough for him to do. His game has been all offense, so if someone capable of scoring from the circle like Kulich is going to replace him, the latter must prove he can play a better all-around game.

Olofsson’s style of play has been too one-dimensional, and his defense, for the most part, is non-existent. Kulich’s defense wasn’t great earlier in the season, but over the course of his one year in Rochester, it’s come along. If he can show that off in training camp, then he will battle Olofsson for the job, along with Savoie and possibly Rousek. This is if Olofsson stays, of course.

If the Buffalo Sabres move Olofsson, then this one may come down to the prospects unless Adams surprises us by adding another winger. Nonetheless, it will be an interesting battle to watch.
