The Buffalo Sabres have made more roster cuts and Zach Benson is on the roster. His chances to make the main roster just improved.

We are a little over a week away from the 2023-24 Buffalo Sabres regular season getting underway. The team will be playing in Columbus tonight as they will take on the Blue Jackets. With us being in training camp and preseason, Buffalo needs to trim its roster down.

Earlier today, the Sabres announced that Jiri Kulich and Isak Rosen will be heading to the Rochester Americans, as well as Brett Murray, but Murray will have to clear waivers. Why are these transactions important? It could mean that Zach Benson will be on the opening night roster.

During the preseason, Benson has been very impressive. I don’t think it was a possibility after he got drafted back in June that he could be on the main roster to start the season but now it’s very much a possibility.

Zach Benson might just sneak onto the Buffalo Sabres roster following cuts

Zach has also found himself playing on the Sabres top line with Tage Thompson and Jeff Skinner. Now even though nothing is set in stone, the chances of him making the roster improved with him surviving the next round of cuts.

He is not out of the woods yet as more cuts will be coming, but with Kulich, Rosen, and Murray gone, Benson is getting closer and closer to making the team. Tonight against the Jackets, Benson is slated to play on a line with Lukas Rousek and Peyton Krebs.

He is also on the power play unit as well. Like I said, he still has to survive the next round of cuts but as of now, it seems more likely he will be on the roster to start the season as the Sabres will be taking on the New York Rangers.

It would be a great story for the 18-year-old to make the main roster, but we will see how he performs tonight, and if he plays in the Sabres final preseason game on Friday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
