The Buffalo Sabres had a successful 2025-26 season, and there is hope that the quest for the Stanley Cup is now an open window. This summer is going to really tell the tale if they can fix some of the things that did not grant them that reality last season.
Even though the National Hockey League is going to be administering a salary cap bump for every team, the Sabres still need to use this money smartly. There is one contract that is burning a hole in their pocket, and they desperately need to get rid of it. That would be the $4 million AAV owed to left wing Jordan Greenway.
These three teams could use a player of his stature, and the return at this point is just to move on from him altogether to save some space to re-sign or extend some of their most important players. Let's talk about it.
San Jose Sharks
This is an interesting concept, as the San Jose Sharks have one of the largest leads in salary cap freedom. If they want someone, money is certainly not an issue as they have an anticipated $40.560 million in available space.
That $4 million would be a pebble hitting the side of a shed, and the Sharks get a bigger body to help their blossoming young top-six. Greenway has played. upwards of 17 minutes a game, and given he can stay healthy, he could be a pivotal third-line winger to keep the pressure on following the onslaughts from Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.
Chicago Blackhawks
Another blossoming young team that needs help in the grit department is Chicago. Also, just like San Jose, they have over $40 million in cash to burn. Greenway could fit in nicely there.
The Central Division is getting a lot tougher, and the Blackhawks are falling behind. Greenway is not going to make or break their revival in the division, but it is a step in the right direction.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers are going through a rough patch, and a retool is underway. Greenway is already in the same state, which is where he was born.
Furthermore, the blueshirts might be letting go of one of their fan-favorites this summer in Matt Rempe. Rempe has been known as this gigantic wrecking ball on skates, willing to throw down with just about everyone. Greenway is not as tall, nor as heavy on the fisticuffs, but could be a nice replacement.
