Buffalo Sabres clearly own the NHL’s best vibes after winning the Game of the Year

Wow, just wow. Yesterday’s 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning is without a doubt the Game of the Year. 15 combined goals, over 100 combined penalty minutes, and no shortage of excitement between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division.

Vibes are high in Buffalo, riding a seven-game win streak since the Olympic break, and in sole possession of first place in their division after defeating Tampa Bay. Captain Rasmus Dahlin expressed how it feels to finally be a part of something like this. He told reporters after the game, “I’m so fired up. I’m so happy. I’m so happy for Buffalo as a city and all the fans, too. This means the world.” Josh Doan, who scored the game-winning goal, spoke on the atmosphere at KeyBank Center as of late, “That’s the crowd that we’ve been looking forward to and the crowd that this city deserves”.

It isn’t just inside the building, but the entire hockey world is taking notice of the Sabres’ success. Buffalo-based sports content creator Ajay Cybulski describes what it feels like to be a fan right now.

Good vibes plus great hockey is the Buffalo Sabres' recipe for success

Good vibes don’t win games… or do they? Buffalo is on a heater, and if you look beyond the microscope of the seven-game win streak, the Sabres are 28-5-2 since December 9. In recent history, there have been many examples of teams that really turn it on in the second half of the season and go on to make a deep run.

Only two seasons ago, the Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Jay Woodcroft early in the 2023-24 season. Then, under Kris Knoblach, they began to find their groove, winning 16 straight games between December and January, and riding those vibes all the way to game seven in the Stanley Cup Finals and ultimately losing to the Florida Panthers.

Multiple Stanley Cup winners have ridden good vibes down the stretch all the way to a championship. In the 2015-16 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a coaching change. Under Mike Sullivan, they had a 33-16-5 record in the final 54 games of the season, and won the first of two straight Stanley Cups.

In 2018-19, the St. Louis Blues were infamously in last place in the NHL in January before completely flipping the script and hoisting the Cup for the first time in franchise history only five months later.

So maybe good vibes can lead to success when paired with great hockey. No one wants to be the team to face the Sabres in the first round of the playoffs, largely in part to the vibes and momentum that’s snowballing in Western New York.
