The Buffalo Sabres were back on the ice for the first time this season as part of the Prospect Challenge in a game against the New Jersey Devils. This isn't the full team but it is a great opportunity for the younger players to make an impact and impress the coaching staff.
One of those players who wasted no time was defenseman Radim Mrtka, who the Sabres drafted with the ninth overall pick in the NHL Draft this past June. He would score the first goal of the tournament with a one-timer from the top of the face-off circle for the Sabres with an assist by Noah Ostlund.

Radim Mrtka contributing in the offensive zone is an added bonus for the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres drafted Mrtka this summer because he is a big defenseman who moves well in the defensive zone. As the scouting report on The Hockey Writers noted, one area he can improve is in the offensive zone and with his shot.
The fact that he was able to score five minutes into the first game has to have Sabres' fans and the coaches excited about his potential. Last season with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, Mrtka had only three goals in 43 games.
He is still probably a few seasons away from contributing at the NHL level but it shows he isn't shying away from the opportunity. The fact that he can make an impact like this has to be a great sign and give the team at least some early confidence they made the right pick.
The Buffalo Sabres unfortunately weren't able to capitalize on the momentum and the New Jersey Devils would score the next two and took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
