Tage Thompson is again putting together another All-Star season with the Sabres this year as he notched his 33rd goal on Monday night against the Oilers. That goal was the game-winning goal and helped the Sabres snap a six-game losing streak.
Thompson had a previous record of 47 goals in a season during the 22-23 season, and with 19 games left in the season, Thompson needs 15 goals to break that mark.
Five goals in his last five games
Although the Sabres have struggled recently, Thompson hasn’t let his foot off the gas as he has carried the load offensively for the Sabres. Thompson has five goals in his last five games, and some of those against playoff teams, and playoff contenders.
The only game Thompson was unable to score in was against the Panthers as the Sabres were shutout 4-0. Josh Norris has played a big factor coming in as the line one center as he and Thompson are gelling well together. I don’t see Thompson slowing down either as their next game comes against the Detroit Red Wings, where Thompson has 11 goals in 18 career games.
Thompson is leading by example
In their recent 6-game skid, Thompson mentioned how the players on the team needed to step up if they wanted to win and be a competitive team. He also mentioned the captains especially need to lead by example to motivate this young group.
He has done just that, and it showed last game as he picked up the team offensively, giving them momentum with the opening goal and the go-ahead goal late in the third period. As the Sabres move forward, this is the kind of game they needed to get their confidence as they have the 5th toughest schedule remaining. Thompson still believes in this team, and if he has to lead the way, then so be it.
Final Thoughts
I think Thompson one day will be a 50-goal scorer in this league, he has already hit 47 in his career and I think he has the chance to break that this year. He may even get 50, it’s not out of the question, especially with the hot streak he has been on. The Sabres need to look at Thompson as a leader, not just for the rest of this year, but for years to come if this team wants to be a contender going forward.
